During transport and storage, fuel is often decanted many times from tank to tank, and whether through condensation or leakage, moisture is able to infiltrate the fuel.  Fungal spores, yeast, and bacteria are commonly found in almost any environment and a fuel tank provides the perfect breeding ground for the growth and spread of these contaminants. The most common of these is “Cladisporium Resinae” - the Diesel Bug. At its worst, serious infestations can cause complete breakdowns, however even mild levels of contaminants can quickly lead to fuel degradation and costly maintenance. The presence of water also increases the susceptibility of fuel tanks to rust and corrosion, leading to deposit formation and further fuel degradation.

Less refined than petrol (gasoline), diesel fuel contains less deposit-control additives and this leads to greater risk of deposit formation across the entire fuel delivery system. Fuel represents a significant percentage of the cost of running heavy trucks and equipment, and fleet managers turn to sophisticated fuel additives and treatments to both prevent deposit formation and clean existing deposits from the fuel system. Though less expensive than diesel, the Heavy Fuel Oils (HFO) and Marine Fuel Oils (MFO) used in the marine industry have their own unique problems. With higher levels of inorganic content, the use of untreated marine and heavy fuel oils can lead to black particulate smoke emissions, sludge build up, cold corrosion, and bacterial growth – all of which contribute to degraded fuel, reduced fuel efficiency, and damaging deposit formation on the engine and fuel delivery system. In addition, marine and heavy fuel oils contain high levels of sodium, sulphur, and vanadium, which require a more specialized fuel treatment additive.

Regardless of whether your power generation plant operates on diesel fuel or heavy fuel oils, your fuel efficiency and performance can be compromised. Fuel degradation can occur during the transport, storage, and decanting stages, and this degraded fuel causes numerous problems throughout your engines and fuel delivery systems.  Untreated heavy fuel oils, already with high levels of sodium, sulphur and vanadium, leave engines susceptible to cold corrosion, toxic emissions, and sludge build-up; while diesel fuel is easily contaminated by water, bacteria, and in particular, the Diesel Bug. Regardless of the source, all of these problems result in reduced fuel efficiency, increased costs, and unnecessary maintenance and downtime.
